LEG 2.4: SKAGEN → FREDERIKSHAVN

Distance: 18 NM

Duration: 3.5 hours @ 5 kts

Route Character: Sheltered coastal passage south along Denmark's east coast

Route Description

Pleasant sailing south through Kattegat approaches. Well-marked and sheltered from west; open to east.

Navigation Waypoints

  1. Departure: Skagen (57°43.2'N, 10°35.4'E)

  2. Skagen Rev Fyr: (57°38.4'N, 10°38.4'E) - Red lighthouse south of Skagen

  3. Frederikshavn approach: (57°26.4'N, 10°32.4'E)

  4. Arrival: Frederikshavn Lystbådehavn (57°26.4'N, 10°32.4'E)

Hazards & Considerations

  • Skagen Rev (Reef): Extensive shallow area extending south from Skagen; stay in marked channel or well offshore

  • Ferry traffic: Frederikshavn is major ferry port (routes to Norway, Sweden, and Læsø); maintain sharp watch

  • Commercial shipping: Moderate traffic; vessels bound for/from Baltic ports

  • Fishing nets: Present but less dense than at Grenen

  • Straightforward passage: Well-marked channels; good conditions typical; much easier than Grenen!

Current & Tide

  • Tidal range: 0.3-0.5 m (minimal compared to Grenen)

  • Current: 0-0.5 kts; negligible compared to what you just experienced

  • Direction: Variable; more wind-driven than tidal

  • Navigation impact: Minimal; this is easy sailing after Grenen

Wind & Weather

  • Prevailing wind (July): SW-W 10-18 kts

  • Sheltered from west: Jutland landmass provides protection from SW winds

  • Exposed to east: Open to Kattegat; E or NE winds create fetch across water

  • Sea state: 0.5-1.5m typical; calm in SW winds; moderate in E winds

  • Fog risk: 10-15% July

  • Best conditions: Most conditions acceptable; this is pleasant, relaxed sailing

  • Shallow approaches to Læsø: Sandbanks around island perimeter; follow marked channels carefully

  • Fishing activity: Moderate; commercial fishing grounds

  • Commercial traffic: Light to moderate; Baltic-bound vessels

  • Weather dependency: Requires SW force 5 or less for comfortable passage

Current & Tide

  • Tidal range: 0.3-0.5 m

  • Current: 0.5-1 kt variable; not strongly tidal

  • Direction: Primarily wind and pressure-driven circulation

  • Navigation impact: Allow for drift; verify position mid-crossing with GPS

Wind & Weather

  • Prevailing wind (July): SW-W 10-18 kts

  • Fetch: Moderate from SW; waves build with distance from shore

  • Sea state: 1-2m typical in SW force 4; 2-3m in force 5

  • Fog risk: 10-15%

  • Best conditions: SW force 3-4 or light N-NE winds

  • Avoid: Force 6+ or poor visibility

Destination: Vesterø Havn, Læsø
