LEG 1.6: RISØR → ARENDAL

Distance: 20 NM

Duration: 4 hours @ 5 kts

Route Character: Sheltered archipelago route

Route Description

Continue southwest through inner leads. Well-marked channels and good shelter throughout.

Navigation Waypoints

  1. Departure: Risør (58°43.2'N, 9°13.8'E)

  2. Barmen passage: (58°40.8'N, 9°06.0'E)

  3. Tromøy bridge: (58°28.2'N, 8°53.4'E) - Pass under bridge (clearance 18m)

  4. Arendal approach: (58°27.6'N, 8°46.2'E)

  5. Arrival: Arendal Pollen (58°27.6'N, 8°46.2'E)

Hazards & Considerations

  • Tromøy bridge: Fixed clearance 18m; mast may need lowering if over 17m (measure carefully)

  • Bridge alternative: Can bypass via outer route adding 5 NM if mast height problematic

  • Depths: Minimum 3m in marked channels; some passages narrow to 40m width

  • Traffic: Moderate; ferries between islands and mainland - maintain VHF watch

  • Unmarked rocks: Less prevalent here; channels well-maintained

  • Fishing nets: Present but less dense than further north

Current & Tide

  • Tidal range: 0.3-0.5 m

  • Current: 0-0.5 kts in most areas; up to 1 kt under Tromøy bridge

  • Direction: Flood sets NE, ebb SW

  • Bridge timing: Pass at slack water if possible for easier control

  • Navigation impact: Minimal except at bridge constriction

Wind & Weather

  • Prevailing wind (May-June): SW 10-15 kts

  • Sheltered route: Well protected throughout; wind shadows from islands

  • Sea state: Calm; 0.2-0.5m maximum

  • Fog risk: 20% May-June; good channel marks make navigation feasible in reduced visibility

  • Best conditions: Any non-gale conditions suitable

  • Bridge crossing: Avoid in force 5+ winds due to turbulence and control issues under bridge

Destination: Arendal (Pollen)

  • Coordinates: 58°27.6'N, 8°46.2'E

  • Depth: 3-6 m in harbor basin; 8-12m in outer approaches
