-
Justøya south: (58°12.0'N, 8°18.0'E) - Last sheltered water
-

Hazards & Considerations
-
Exposure increase: Final 8 NM fully exposed to SW swell from Skagerrak
-
Oksøy area: Strong currents near lighthouse (up to 2 kts); numerous rocks and shoals
-
Grønningen shoal: Extensive shallow area SE of Oksøy; marked by cardinal buoys - stay clear
-
Commercial traffic: Major port; cruise ships, cargo vessels, tankers common - maintain VHF watch Channel 16
-
Kristiansand TSS: Traffic Separation Scheme approaches from south; small craft should cross at right angles if necessary
-
Weather dependency: Last 8 NM uncomfortable in SW force 5+; consider waiting at Lillesand if forecast poor
-
Oksøy passage timing: Pass lighthouse on favorable current if possible (saves 30 minutes)
Current & Tide
-
Tidal range: 0.4-0.6 m
-
Current: 0.5-1 kt generally; 1.5-2 kts near Oksøy lighthouse
-
Direction: Flood sets E-NE, ebb sets W-SW (parallel to coast)
-
Timing: Check tidal diamond on chart near Oksøy; plan to have favorable current here
-
Navigation impact: Significant near Oksøy; can add or subtract 1 hour to passage time
-
Current prediction: Flood begins ~3 hrs before high water Kristiansand, ebb ~3 hrs after
Wind & Weather
-
Prevailing wind (May-June): SW-W 10-20 kts; can gust 25+ kts near Oksøy
-
Critical section: Final 8 NM exposed; assess conditions carefully before committing
-
Sea state: 1-2m typical in SW force 4; 2-4m in force 6 (avoid)
-
Fog risk: 15-20% May-June; dangerous here due to traffic and rocks
-
Best conditions: N or NE winds force 3-4, or light SW force 3
-
Go/No-go decision: At Justøya south, if SW force 5+ and building, turn back to Lillesand

LEG 1.9: KRISTIANSAND → MANDAL
Distance: 22 NM
Duration: 4.5 hours @ 5 kts
Route Character: Exposed south coast; open to Skagerrak swell
Route Description
First leg of exposed southern Norway coast. Fully open to Atlantic swell; requires good weather window.
Navigation Waypoints
-
Departure: Kristiansand Gjestehavn (58°08.4'N, 8°00.0'E)
-
Odderøya lighthouse: (58°07.2'N, 7°59.4'E) - Western harbor entrance
-
Ny-Hellesund: (58°04.2'N, 7°51.0'E) - Fishing village (emergency shelter)
-
Skjernøysund: (58°01.8'N, 7°40.2'E) - Narrow sound (can cut inside if calm)
-
Arrival: Mandal Gjestehavn (58°01.8'N, 7°27.6'E)
Hazards & Considerations
-
Fully exposed coast: No shelter from SW swell; waves break heavily on rocks in gales
-
Skjernøy area: Numerous submerged rocks; stay in marked channel or 500m+ offshore
-
Ny-Hellesund option: Small harbor provides emergency shelter if conditions deteriorate
-
Weather dependency: CRITICAL - only sail in SW force 4 or less; force 5+ dangerous
-
Commercial traffic: Oil tankers bound for Kristiansand pass 2-5 NM offshore
-
Fishing gear: Extensive; look for small marker buoys especially near headlands
-
Rock ledges: Extend 200-500m from shore in places; submerged at high tide; stay offshore or use large-scale charts
Current & Tide
-
Tidal range: 0.5-0.7 m
-
Current: Norway Coastal Current sets SW at 0.5-1.5 kts continuously
-
Direction: Predominantly SW parallel to coast; rarely reverses
-
Wind-driven current: Southerly gales can create 2+ kt SW current
-
Navigation impact: Favorable heading SW (this direction); adds 30-45 minutes to passage time
-
Tide timing: Less important than weather; current similar at all tidal states
Wind & Weather
-
Prevailing wind (May-June): SW-W 10-20 kts; afternoon sea breeze builds to 20-25 kts
-
CRITICAL ASSESSMENT: Check forecast for 24 hours ahead; SW force 5+ makes passage uncomfortable to dangerous
-
Sea state: 1-2m typical in SW force 4; 3-5m in force 6 (AVOID)
-
Wave period: Short (4-6 sec) makes seas steeper and more uncomfortable
-
Fog risk: 15-20% May-June; DANGEROUS here due to rocks and traffic; do not sail in fog
-
Best conditions: N or NE winds force 3-4 (beam reach), or very light SW force 2-3
-
Go/No-go: At Odderøya, assess visible conditions; if whitecaps numerous or breaking seas on outer rocks, consider waiting
-
Weather window: Often must wait 1-3 days at Kristiansand for suitable conditions; this is normal and prudent
-
Local advice: "If in doubt, don't go out" - Norwegian saying for this coast
