LEG 1.5: KRAGERØ → RISØR

Distance: 25 NM

Duration: 5 hours @ 5 kts

Route Character: Mixed inner archipelago and outer coast

Route Description

Continue southwest through increasingly scenic archipelago. Route offers choice between outer (faster, exposed) and inner (slower, sheltered) passages.

Navigation Waypoints - Recommended Inner Route

  1. Departure: Kragerø (58°52.2'N, 9°24.0'E)

  2. Portør passage: (58°48.6'N, 9°18.0'E) - Narrow sound

  3. Lyngør village: (58°46.2'N, 9°12.0'E) - Optional stop; very picturesque

  4. Sandøya: (58°44.4'N, 9°08.4'E) - Pass north of island

  5. Arrival: Risør (58°43.2'N, 9°13.8'E)

Alternative Outer Route

  • Pass south of Jomfruland and outside the main archipelago

  • Faster but exposed to SW swell

  • Only recommended in settled conditions

  • Adds 3 NM but straight-line sailing

Hazards & Considerations

  • Portør sound: Very narrow (30m); proceed slowly; priority to commercial vessels

  • Depths: 3-4m minimum in inner route; requires attention to chart

  • Lyngør area: Car-free island; numerous small boats and dinghies - slow speed

  • Rock hazards: Extensive unmarked rocks throughout - local knowledge valuable or stay in marked channels

  • Fishing activity: Heavy June-August; lobster pots and nets common

  • Choice point: At Portør, decide inner (scenic, slow) vs outer (faster, exposed) based on conditions

Current & Tide

  • Tidal range: 0.4-0.6 m

  • Current: 0-0.8 kts in inner passages

  • Direction: Follows tide; flood NE, ebb SW

  • Timing: Plan departure on ebb (outgoing) tide for slight boost

  • Portør sound: Current up to 1.5 kts on spring ebb; time passage for slack or favorable

Wind & Weather

  • Prevailing wind (May-June): SW-W 10-18 kts

  • Route choice: Inner route viable in all but gale conditions; outer requires force 4 or less from SW

  • Sea state: Inner: calm; Outer: 1-2m typical

  • Fog risk: 20-25% May-June

  • Best conditions: Inner route always safe; outer route best in N or NE winds

  • Local knowledge: Inner route preferred by Norwegian sailors in uncertain conditions

Destination: Risør

  • Coordinates: 58°43.2'N, 9°13.8'E

  • Depth: 4-8 m

  • Fuel: Available at harbor fuel dock

  • Provisions: Good supermarket (Coop) 300m from harbor

  • Repair: Good chandlery and small boatyard

  • Anchorage: Well-sheltered inner harbor; outer anchorage available but less protected

  • Dining:

Casual/Takeaway: Café Unn - sandwiches, soup, pastries, harbor views, NOK 90-150
    Phone: +47 37 15 22 44

Restaurant: Stangholmen Fyr Restaurant - seafood, lighthouse location, NOK 280-420
    Phone: +47 37 14 09 99

  • Notes: One of Norway's most beautiful wooden towns; white-painted historic houses

  • Tourist season: Popular July-August; quieter in May-June

  • Worth visiting: Wooden boat center; town center extremely picturesque

  • VHF: Channel 16/12 for harbor

  • Language: Norwegian / English
