Hånstholm to Skagen: The Graveyard of Ships
LEG 2.3: HIRTSHALS → SKAGEN
Distance: 22 NM
Duration: 4.5 hours @ 5 kts
Route Character: Coastal passage around Grenen (northernmost Denmark)
Route Description
Round the "top of Denmark" where North Sea meets Baltic Sea (Skagerrak meets Kattegat). Famous tidal race at Grenen point; requires careful timing.
Navigation Waypoints
-
Departure: Hirtshals (57°35.8'N, 9°58.2'E)
-
Nordre Rønner buoy: (57°45.0'N, 10°34.8'E) - Major navigation mark north of Grenen
-
Grenen point: (57°44.8'N, 10°37.8'E) - Where two seas meet; STRONG CURRENTS
-
Skagen approach: (57°43.2'N, 10°35.4'E)
-
Arrival: Skagen Havn (57°43.2'N, 10°35.4'E)
Hazards & Considerations
Grenen Point - Critical Area:
-
Two seas meet: North Sea and Baltic (Skagerrak/Kattegat) converge here creating unique tidal dynamics
-
Strong tidal race: Currents 3-5 kts routinely; can exceed 6 kts during spring tides
-
Confused seas: Waves from two different directions create steep, dangerous pyramidal waves
-
Timing absolutely critical: Must round at or very near slack water (within 1 hour window)
-
Shallow sandbanks: Extend north from Grenen; stay in marked channel or well offshore (1+ NM)
-
Overfalls: Standing waves and breaking seas form in strong currents even in moderate winds
-
Historic danger: Many wrecks in this area; treat with utmost respect
Nordre Rønner area:
-
Major shipping lane: Heavy traffic; TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme) approaches Baltic
-
Large ships: Container ships, tankers limited by draft; cannot maneuver freely
-
Stay clear: Pass well north (500m+) of shipping lane centerline
-
VHF watch: Monitor Channel 16; ships may call if you're close to their track
Grenen sandbanks:
-
Shifting sands: Banks change position seasonally; don't rely solely on old charts
-
Minimum depth: 3-4m in marked channel; less than 1m on banks themselves
-
Breaking seas: Waves break dangerously on banks in strong winds or currents
-
Stay in channel: Follow marked fairway religiously or stay 1+ NM offshore
Fishing activity:
-
Extensive: Major commercial fishing grounds
-
Nets and gear: Watch for small marker buoys (white/orange)
-
Trawlers: Common; give wide berth when gear deployed
Current & Tide - Grenen Point
THIS IS THE MOST CURRENT-DEPENDENT LEG OF THE ENTIRE VOYAGE
Tidal Streams:
-
Strength: 3-5 kts normal conditions; 6+ kts spring tides
-
Direction: Rotates around Grenen point in complex pattern
-
Slack water: Approximately high water Skagen +2 hours (verify with Danish tide tables - DMI)
-
Flood: Sets from North Sea into Kattegat (SE direction around point)
-
Ebb: Sets from Kattegat to North Sea (NW direction around point)
-
Unpredictable eddies: Counter-currents near shore; stay mid-channel or offshore
Timing Requirements (MANDATORY):
-
MUST pass Grenen: Within 1 hour of slack water
-
Ideal: Pass exactly at slack (zero current)
-
Acceptable: Within 30 minutes either side of slack
-
Dangerous: More than 1 hour from slack; strong race conditions develop
-
Unacceptable: 2+ hours from slack; potentially life-threatening conditions
Planning Your Passage:
-
Check Danish tide tables: DMI.dk or nautical almanac for Skagen
-
Calculate slack: High water Skagen +2 hours = approximate slack (verify exact time)
-
Departure time from Hirtshals: Work backwards from required Grenen arrival time
-
Allow flexibility: Better to arrive early and heave-to than arrive late
-
If early: Slow down north of Hirtshals; do NOT arrive at Grenen before slack
-
If late: Better to wait for next slack (6 hours) than force passage in strong current
Current Prediction:
-
Spring tides (full/new moon): Stronger currents; larger tidal range; more dangerous
-
Neap tides (quarter moon): Weaker currents; easier passage
-
Check moon phase: Note if spring or neap when planning your crossing week
Wind & Weather
Prevailing wind (July): SW-W 10-18 kts
Wind-against-tide concerns (CRITICAL):
-
Most dangerous combination: SW wind force 5+ combined with ebb tide
-
Creates: Very steep, breaking pyramidal seas at Grenen; can be dangerous even for large ships
-
Best conditions: Light winds or wind aligned with current direction
-
Acceptable: Force 4 or less from any direction if at slack water
-
Avoid: Force 5+ from any direction; wait for calmer conditions
Sea state:
-
At slack water: 1-2m typical; manageable
-
With strong current: 3-5m+ steep, breaking seas; very dangerous
-
North Sea swell: Always present; adds to local wave height
-
Kattegat waves: Can oppose North Sea swell creating confused seas
Fog risk: 15-20% July; extremely dangerous here due to traffic and currents; absolutely wait for clear visibility
Best conditions for rounding Grenen: Light N, NE, or E winds force 3-4, at slack water, good visibility
Go/No-go decision: If wind force 5+ OR poor visibility OR can't make slack water timing, wait at Hirtshals for next suitable window (possibly 6-12 hours)

Character: Artist colony, dramatic light, two seas meet, "Graveyard of Ships"
Grenen [QR-047] - Denmark's northernmost point where Kattegat meets Skagerrak. You can stand with one foot in each sea. Very Instagrammable. Also: strong currents, don't swim here.
The Light:
Artists have flocked to Skagen for 150+ years because of the light—sharp, clear, strange. The Skagen Painters (1870s-1900s) captured this. Museums full of their work.
Skagens Museum [QR-048] - Skagen Painters' works, beautiful, worth the visit. €15.
⚓ Skagen: Graveyard of Ships
Skagen's coast is littered with shipwrecks. Why?
- Convergence - Kattegat and Skagerrak meet, currents clash
- Shoals - Shallow sandbars shift, hidden reefs
- Weather - Storms from two directions at once
- History - Centuries of shipping, no GPS, fog, darkness
Hundreds of ships wrecked here. Some visible at low tide. Some buried. Some turned into museums.
Skagen Shipwreck Museum [QR-049] - Stories of ships lost, sailors saved (or not). Somber but fascinating. €12.
The lesson: Respect the coast. Charts, depth sounder, attention—always.

🍴 Ruths Hotel [QR-050]
- Historic (1899), upscale
- French-Danish fusion
- €60-100
